Naked Modern Japanese Cuisine

Previously known as Naked Gurume Gyarari, Naked has moved from Soho’s Elgin Street to a larger space in East Tsim Sha Tsui where chef Justin Chan continues to deliver quality modern Japanese cuisine.

The Space

Naked’s main entrance took us a little while to find, but once inside, one would understand the reason behind the restaurant’s relocation: not only is the space considerably bigger and has the capacity for a traditional sushi bar, the restaurant has been cleverly fitted with sliding doors to partition different sections of the restaurant into private dining areas. The dimly lit interior also contributes to a more intimate dining experience.

The Food

Chef Justin Chan’s innovative spirit and passion for healthy eating have been carried over to the new Naked. Essentially an upgraded California roll with a healthy kick, the Naked pink lady roll ($148) was made with Alaskan king crab and avocado, with beetroot added to the rice giving it a shade of magenta and a touch of antioxidants. We also enjoyed the short rib with garlic soy gravy and turmeric mashed potato ($248). The marinated beef ribs were cooked sous vide for 48 hours at 54°C. The meat was very tender and flavourful, while the tendons were softened and melted in our mouths. The DIY Seductive Wrap ($380) was the highlight of our meal. Ingredients of Australian Wagyu beef, uni, beef tartare with quail egg, shiso leaves and various condiments were served on a wooden board where we got to create our own wrap. Who says you shouldn’t play with your food? We finished off the meal with a green tea matcha affogato ($128) with Irish cream panna cotta, red bean puree, matcha ice cream, coffee beans and a shot of espresso. The housemade rice puffs served on the side gave the dessert added texture and left us craving for more.

Naked does their Japanese classics well, and while we adored the concepts behind more creative dishes, they are at times a little too adventurous and left our palates feeling somewhat unsure. The matcha affogato alone, however, will bring us back, and we look forward to what else chef Justin will bring to the table.

Spending: approx. $500 per head for dinner
Highlights: Seductive Wrap, Green Tea Matcha Affogato
What else: lunch sets are available from a very affordable $78
