Where old-world private club meets Japanese cocktails is Bar De Luxe by Bar High Five, now opened at the bespoke menswear outfitter Attire House at Central.
Words Iris Wong
Perched on the top floor at 8 Wyndham Street, Bar De Luxe is nothing short of gentlemanly: charming, refined and oozing understated sophistication. A collaboration between Brandon Chau and Roger Chan of Attire House and Ginza’s Bar High Five, it’s a smart Japanese cocktail bar with plush leather seating, a panoramic view of the city and legendary mixologist Hidetsugu Ueno’s protégé, Yuriko Naganuma, at the helm.
While there are wine and champagne lists, the real stars at Bar De Luxe are the cocktails. Presentation is minimal with only an occasional garnish of orange peel for aroma so the cocktails can be appreciated for themselves. While fans of Bar High Five will be glad to see Ueno-san’s famous green-tea whisky cocktail, Ceremony ($178), on the menu, we’ve got our eyes on Yuriko-san’s creations. Our favourites include Hazy Moon ($168), a sweet and creamy concoction of rum and red bean liqueur, and the refreshing Evening Cool Cocktail ($168) of Peroni and yuzu liqueur topped with frozen “foam” of ginger liqueur, bitters and fresh lemon juice.
Although the prices are not wallet-friendly (signature cocktails start at $168), the relaxing ambiance, spacious seating and attentive service make Bar De Luxe the perfect location for a late-afternoon tipple or a quiet nightcap. Did we mention the great bar snacks?
Spending: from $158 per head
Highlights: Ceremony, Evening Cool Cocktail, Hazy Moon
What else: grab a snack and a morning cuppa from 10am, or one of Yuriko-san’s signature drinks at cocktail hour from 5pm.
